About us

What Do We Do?

Bournemouth Gateway Club is a social and activities club for adults 18+ with learning or related disabilites.

We are affiliated to Mencap, which means we work with them and abide by their rules.

We are a Gateway Active Centre which means we focus on health and wellbeing, and we support, encourage, inform and advise our members in these areas.

We run the Mencap Gateway Award, which focusses on the areas of fitness, lifestyle, volunteering, hobbies and adventure challenge.

We also get involved with other local groups, arrange one off events or activities.

Club History

During 2010 we decided to become affiliated to Mencap and this was completed early 2011. We are an offical Mencap Gateway Club. This means that we follow their constitution (rules) and can get help, ideas and support from them. They also do our CRB (criminal records bureau) checks on all our volunteers.

The story so far

In June 2010 we became registered as a charity.

In 2011 Saturdays continued to run but now with upto 50 members each session. In response to the cuts in day service budgets and closure of day centres we decided to open club on a Thursday day time to enable people to have a base to come to, meet with their peers, undertake meaningful activities etc at minimal cost. We opened in February 2011 and Thursday club continues to grow steadily.

In late 2011 we entered discussions with Mencap and agreed to become a Mencap Gateway Active Club from 2012. This means that from April 2012 we will run the Gateway Award (see the Gateway Award page) and also act as an information and advice centre for adults with LD, their families, carers and professionals to let people know about local activites and events, improve health and wellbeing, choices, inclusion and social interaction.

As part of our Mencap project we took on our first members of paid staff, Rachel Sykes as gateway award officer, Tommy Churchill as club leader and Chrissy Hedges as information and advice officer. Many thanks to our regular volunteers who continue to support us so genrously with their time and efforts.

In February 2012 we became a local branch of DotComUnity - working together to provide information about events, leisure, social and general information for adults with disabilities in the local area.

In April 2012 we launched the Gateway award and are looking forward to an exciting an eventful year ahead!
